30-year-old dies after crashing while fleeing police in Southern Indiana

The Scott County Sheriff's Office said this car refused to stop and led to a police pursuit that ended in a crash near Austin, Ind.

SCOTT CO., Ind. (WHAS11) – A 30-year-old Indiana man died while refusing to stop for a traffic stop and fleeing police in Scott County, Ind. on July 18.

The Scott County Sheriff’s office said a deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop on Jesse A. Murphy’s black 2004 Chevrolet Impala before 8 p.m. Thursday.

The Impala ran a red light at Lake Road and State Road 56 in Scottsburg, according to the sheriff’s office, and continued east—while driving recklessly.

The vehicle approached I-65 north and merged into traffic, Murphy refused to stop his vehicle and deputies followed him with lights and sirens on, police said.

It was when the vehicle reached Exit 34, for Austin, when it left the roadway and flipped multiple times, according to police. Murphy was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said they believe Murphy was involved in an attempted theft at a Scottsburg business before the pursuit started.

The Indiana State Police is investigating this crash.

No one else was injured in this crash. 

Murphy is from Edinburgh, Ind.
