LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Officials with the Kentucky Center say one of their popular pieces of art is safe following a Wednesday fire.
The Coloured Gates of Louisville, a sculpture by artist John Chamberlain, had thousands of gallons of water cascading behind it as crews battled the fire on the roof. The piece hangs outside of the Bomhard Theatre.
Art preservationist Robert Kleeman with the Conservation Center told officials the piece was still “100% intact.” He said there was also water and silt on the piece but crews were able to “wipe it down with denatured alcohol which bonds to the water and evaporates quickly, eliminating any danger of corrosion.”
Officials say the piece will be rewrapped in a protective cover and also mentions that no artwork in the building sustained damage from the fire or water.
The Kentucky Center and the garage will remain closed through Monday.
