INDIANAPOLIS — During his daily briefing, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb said that schools will remain closed through the rest of the school year.
In mid-March, the Governor extended his original order to close schools through May 1, but has taken it a step further. Gov. Holcomb also ordered all non-public schools to close.
State Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick said school leaders will work with teachers to continue school online via E-Learning.
"Our goal is given this very difficult situation is to ensure that students have some type of continuous learning," McCormick said.
McCormick said graduating seniors are still required to have earned their credits, saying any classes they are currently enrolled in will count towards graduation. Students in lower grades must still meet requirements to move on to the next grade level.
The order also impacts teachers and their training. CPR requirements and other expiring teacher licenses will be extended through September 1.
As of April 2, there are 3,039 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state and 78 coronavirus-related deaths. There are 700 people in ICU.
