FLOYDS KNOBS, Ind. — The Floyd County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a 23-year-old found at the home of former University of Louisville dance coach Todd Sharp's home.
Officers were dispatched to Sharp's home in Floyds Knobs, where Sharp said Samuel Phelps of La Grange was unresponsive. Sharp said he saw Phelps on Bardstown Road May 3.
Sharp told officers he saw Phelps was hungry, so he bought him food and took him to his house. The next day, Phelps was sleeping when Sharp left the house. When he returned with a friend, Phelps was sitting in the kitchen unresponsive.
Police and EMS determined Phelps had died hours earlier. An autopsy was done and investigators are waiting on a toxicology report. Sheriff Frank Loop said it is an ongoing investigation.
“We did an autopsy, we didn’t find any evidence of foul play." Loop said. "We’re going to have to wait for those toxicology results to tell us if he ingested something.”
Sharpe was fired from the university in 2018 for financial misconduct after a six-month review found the team's deposits were around $40,000 less than expected. Athletic Director Vince Tyra said Sharp directed the submission of funds to himself in cash.
He recently made headlines in February when he accidentally shot himself at a downtown hotel. Sharp's attorney Larry Wilder told WHAS11 Sharp had gotten out of an Uber and was reaching for his phone in his pocket when his gun accidentally discharged, hitting him in the leg.
