LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – UofL is telling it's former Hall of Fame basketball coach that it wants its money back. In the face of serious NCAA sanctions and the possibility of a lost championship title.
The UofL Athletic Association has filed a countersuit against Rick Pitino. The claim in federal court, demands that the coach repay any losses that may arise from damaged business relationships as well as "bonuses and other compensation" paid during the 2013 national championship season.
The countersuit claims Pitino damaged the men's basketball program's ability to make money. The suit also claims Pitino hurt the university's ability to sell tickets and secure donations.
No dollar amount was listed in the countersuit but the university may be forced to return revenue from four years' worth of NCAA tournament appearance.
We contacted Pitino’s Attorney Steve Pence, and he had a one word response about the lawsuit—“petty.”
