'The Zoo is an icon of the city': Vibrant new mural welcomes guests to Louisville Zoo

The art collective Often Seen Rarely Spoken created the piece.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Visitors to the Louisville Zoo will be getting a pleasant surprise when they walk into the zoo now.

A vibrant new mural has now been added to the zoo's entrance. It features several different animals including a tiger, a  giraffe and an orangutan.

“The new mural space was a perfect canvas for some animal artwork and nicely complements the new entrance signage that we installed last year,” Zoo Director Dan Maloney said.

The art collective Often Seen Rarely Spoken (OSRS) created the piece. Since forming in 2016, the collective has done more than 200 murals in 12 states according to the collective's website.

“We thoroughly enjoy contributing art to the visual culture of Louisville and think it’s important to capture the opportunity to communicate on blank wall space,” the OSRS collective said. “The Zoo is an icon of the city that we all grew up coming to, so it feels full circle coming back as adults to add a piece in the entryway that will be seen by every single person that comes to the zoo. Literally thousands of kids might be inspired by this art in the coming decade, and that effect is hard to measure right now, but we know it’s going to be impactful.”

The OSRS has also partnered with Norton Children's Hospital, Mercury Ballroom, Belle of Louisville and Copper and Kings according to its website.
