LOUISVILLE, Ky. — WHAS11 visited the Wallitsch Garden Center recently to ask about planting and fertilizing tips to make sure your garden is as green as can be this spring.
The abnormal weather and temperature variations in Kentuckiana have made it difficult to know when to plant and prepare your garden accordingly so far this year.
"It actually started back in December when we had the drought. We had the drought going back through June, July and August.," Ray from the garden center said.
The arctic cold air we experienced last Christmas decimated local vegetation that has been hearty over the last 20 years for our area.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you tend to your garden this spring:
- Fertilizing on or near Derby Day is suggested to keep your garden green
- Begin watering pre-existing shrubs due to last winter's arctic cold temperature swings
- Apply fertilizer once in the spring, once in the summer and again once in the fall
- Keep plants in the garage or protect them if temperatures near the frost/freeze mark again this Spring
- Planting is suggested around the Kentucky Derby or Mother's Day
