National Preparedness Month | Are you prepared for severe weather?

LG&E crews said they are always training to make sure they are quick to respond in cases of emergencies.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky has had more then one natural disaster in less than a year.

In December of 2021, tornadoes ripped through western Kentucky, killing power for more than 26,000 people.

It took weeks to get everyone back online.

Then in July of 2022, the flooding in eastern Kentucky knocked the power out for more than 23,000 Kentuckians.

After such devastating weather, LG&E wants to make sure people are prepared in case of a disaster.

Crews said they are always training to make sure they are quick to respond in cases of emergencies.

A crew walked WHAS11 through the steps they take to get power back on, and how they investigate suspected gas leaks during major restoration efforts.

LG&E does these types of training once a week to keep every employee up to speed.

September is National Preparedness Month, and crews want everyone to be ready for severe weather as well.

"Unfortunately, we've seen the major events that effected eastern and western Kentucky, we've seen the kinds of impacts...that can occur, and the processes that take place to help individuals and the community recovery after and event of that kind," Liz Pratt, a LG&E KU spokesperson, said.

How you can prepare yourself before severe weather

  • Make a plan - involve each person in your home so you know where to meet and how to contact each other
  • Make an emergency kit - load up on essentials to last at least 72 hours like medicine, water, first aid kits and battery-operated flashlights and radios
  • Stay informed
