Seven nonprofits will be selected to participate in a storytelling event and competition.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new program for nonprofits will honor Old National Bank shooting victim Tommy Elliott.

His family is helping launch a storytelling program to help nonprofit leaders share their missions more effectively.

"I'm here to tell you, fundraising for nonprofit community is about storytelling," Louisville's honorary ambassador Barbara Sexton-Smith said. "Everybody must tell your story and learn to tell it."

Sexton-Smith is one of the Elliott's longest friends.

She helped connect their find with the Leadership Louisville Center and the Ignite Program.

Seven nonprofits will be selected to participate in a storytelling event and competition.

Tommy's wife, Maryanne Elliott, said this is the kid of work he was invested in.

Good storytelling, as [Sexton-Smith] said, is a must for nonprofit leaders to really sell their work, because stories are the connection that build our community," she said.

"Imagine if every nonprofit could tell a compelling story that captivates and inspires so that people support their mission it's a pretty exciting thing."

Nonprofits have until Sept. 1 to apply for the program. Anyone interested in applying can do so here.
