VIEWER PHOTOS | Northern Lights graces Kentucky and Indiana skies

Some WHAS11 News viewers probably checked "see the Northern Lights" off their bucket list on Friday!

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Friday night was a sight to behold. Hoosiers and Kentuckians alike probably checked "see the Northern Lights" off their bucket list!

Thanks to a rare severe (G5) geomagnetic storm, the Northern Lights made an appearance in Kentucky and Indiana skies.

On Thursday, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center issued a watch for the storm over the weekend – the first since 2003.

NOAA said the storm will continue and persist through at least Sunday.

Geomagnetic storms do have the potential to impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on the planet’s surface including potential disruptions to communications, electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations, officials added.

The Northern Lights light up the night sky when solar winds hit Earth's atmosphere.
