Donate supplies for shelter animals through curbside ‘kitten shower’

The Kentucky Humane Society and Purrfect Day Cat Cafe are teaming up to gather donations for hundreds of kittens in need.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This week, you can help take care of hundreds of kittens in our community by donating much-needed supplies to a local animal shelter.

The Kentucky Humane Society and the Purrfect Day Cat Cafe are teaming up to host a curbside ‘kitten shower’ this week after the coronavirus pandemic canceled the shelter’s traditional event. KHS is asking for donations of supplies like canned food and baby bottles. (Full list of items is below.)

You can drop off donations at the Purrfect Day Cat Cafe on Bardstown Road from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting on Tuesday, June 16. Donations will be accepted through June 20. Everyone who brings a donation will get a $1 off coupon for a purchase at the Purrfect Day Cat Café.

Here's a full list of accepted items:

  • Heating pads (microwavable discs or plug-in)
  • Small food scales (for weighing tiny kittens) - weigh up to 3 lbs.
  • Baby wipes (unscented)
  • Canned kitten food - Iams, Wellness, and Purina are best.
  • Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR)--both powder and liquid

During what the Kentucky Humane Society calls its “kitten season,” there are hundreds of kittens at the shelter who need loving homes. If you want to do more to help, KHS is also looking for foster homes

Through the foster program, you can bring a kitten into your home until it is old enough to be spayed or neutered and adopted. According to KHS Foster Manager Kayla Saylor, that timeline is usually a few weeks.

“Fostering cats and kittens is a fun, rewarding way to help needy animals,” she said.

If you fall in love with the kitten you're fostering and want to adopt it, you always can.

You can learn more about the Curbside Kitten Shower on Facebook. If you'd like more information on the KHS Foster Program, visit the Kentucky Humane Society website.

Since it opened in August 2018, the Purrfect Day Cat Cafe has found forever homes for more than 2,000 cats and has donated $35,000 to the Kentucky Humane Society.
