LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A 3-month-old puppy and a 2-month-old kitten met each other at a vulnerable time in their lives -- and are now inseparable.
The young pup, named Quill, arrived at the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) after an "altercation" with another dog in early November. Officials said his mouth could not close properly, and it was clear that he was in a lot of pain.
"Our veterinary team immediately gave Quill medication to ward off the pain and infection," Andrea Mattingly, a spokesperson for KHS, said.
However, x-rays showed that his lower jaw suffered a bilateral break. KHS' vet team performed surgery to temporarily realign and secure his jaw bones, but this was not a permanent solution. A few days later, they surgically removed dead bone from his jaw, and now he can close his mouth and eat by himself again.
A few days later, the young kitten, named Fritter, arrived at the humane society. Mattingly said he arrived as a stray with a "shocking eye injury." She added that he was "desperately in need of quick medical attention."
"His right eye was protruding from the socket and needed to be removed to avoid further complications or infection," Mattingly said.
Together, Quill and Fritter began their road to recovery.
"Fritter snuggled up to Quill as if they'd known each other in a past life. It’s clear that these two are happiest together, even trying to share their food. Their friendship melted our hearts and we couldn't bear to separate them while they continue healing," Mattingly said.
The two remain together, but now at a foster home waiting for a forever family.
