Kentucky Humane Society takes in animals from shelter impacted by tornado

The humane society welcomed almost 40 animals to their facility on Wednesday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky Humane Society's East Campus is closed while staff care for animals that were at a shelter impacted by the weekend storms.

The humane society welcomed almost 40 animals to their facility on Wednesday.

In a post on social media, the Muhlenberg County Humane Society pleaded for help in rehousing animals while they worked to repair the building. They said half of the shelter is without power and "part of the roofing is in the field next door."

In response, KHS not only took in the animals, but brought donated supplies as well.

"We are extremely crowded right now and are being asked to help in many ways from the public, other shelters," President and CEO Alisa Oerther Gray said. "But we felt like we really needed to make sure we could lend a hand to the shelter."

Muhlenberg County was hit by an EF-1 tornado on Memorial Day weekend.

It's unclear how long the East Campus will be closed.
