You can help LMAS fight Code Red status by adopting Mahogany Coconut, a sweet pup who loves other dogs and car rides

This week’s WHAS11 Shelter Star is a 3-year-old Shar Pei mix who’s looking for a family to play with her then curl up on the couch.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — At LouisvilleMetro Animal Services (LMAS), hundreds of adoptable dogs and cats are desperately waiting for their forever family. The shelter is overcrowded, and when a dog stays for too long, tough decisions have to be made. Still, staff believe there is a family for every animal, they just need to find them.

One of the dogs most at risk right now is a 3-year-old Shar Pei mix who has been in shelter custody for way too long.

"She was in the shelter for about 100 days. Then, she's been in foster for multiple months at this point and there's really no reason for it cause she's a really good dog,” Sarah Clark, LMAS volunteer, said.

Mahogany Coconut is great with other dogs, but also does great as a solo dog. She isn't a big fan of cats. Her energy level is manageable, meaning she's playful and loves toys but can also relax. She knows basic commands and does well in her foster home.

"She's kind of a chameleon dog. Her energy will just match yours a lot of the time," Clark said. "So if you want to rest and rot on your couch and watch Netflix, she's your girl. If you want to go on a hike, she's in it. Pretty much anywhere you want to go and be, she's cool to go with you."

Clark described Mahogany Coconut as a great dog, who she can’t believe is still in the shelter. She said it’s rare to find a dog who will fit in anywhere, but she truly believes this dog will.

Mahogany Coconut is in foster care right now so if you'd like to set up a meet and greet, contact the LMAS foster team at MASFoster@Louisvilleky.gov
