Louisville Metro Animal Services to reopen after negative distemper test

Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects dogs and other animals.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) will reopen Friday at noon after a distemper test came back negative.

In a post on social media, LMAS thanked Idexx Labs of Louisville for their help.

Officials closed the shelter on Thursday as a precaution after a potential distemper case was detected within the shelter.

Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects dogs and other animals. It can lead to respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms.

"We are committed to the well-being of all animals in our care and the community," Interim Director Adam Hamilton said. “Halting intake and adoptions are the best way to ensure animals are safe. While we vaccinate upon intake, not all pets have built immunity. We appreciate the public's cooperation during this time.”
