LMAS: Sweet dog believed to be burned and tied up on July 4th finally healed, ready for adoption

Freedom came to the Louisville Animal Shelter with burn marks on her legs a day after the Fourth of July. Staff believe she was hit with fireworks.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) sees all kinds of dogs, including those facing serious injuries, needing to be healed back to health.

This week’s WHAS11 Shelter Star had burn marks on her legs when the animal shelter first got her, a day after the Fourth of July. Staff believe the burns came from fireworks. Despite the serious injuries, her personality has continued to shine.

"When she first came in, she was very sad, lethargic, didn't want to do a whole lot. And she has just done a full 180 -- she is perky, happy, she is an angel for all her treatments, bandage changes, us cleaning it, she has been a fabulous patient,” LMAS Clinic Specialist Cassidie Cartwright said.

The sweet female, appropriately named "Freedom," was tied to pole with burn marks marring her legs when she was first discovered. Her injuries were so severe, her toe had to be amputated but her spirit was never broken.

Freedom is up for adoption at LMAS!

"Even when she first came in, you could tell she was in an immense amount of pain. She was still just so sweet. Gave so many kisses,” Cartwright said.

Freedom is a friend to all creatures, but she especially loves other dogs. She walks great on a leash. LMAS staff said she is completely house trained, and unless they take her outside, she doesn't go.

Her energy is considered easy. As she continues to heal, she has started to play more.

"She's probably your classic Heinz 57 dog -- a good mix of a lot of things," Cartwright said.

Freedom's also a staff favorite and has totally won over the clinic staff who have been spending a lot of time with her, helping her heal.

"She is one of the dogs that really inspires me and the work that I do. Just seeing how resilient animals can be. How much pain, what they can endure and still be so forgiving,” Cartwright said.

Now, Freedom is finally ready for adoption and ready to give a human another chance at loving her in a way she deserves.

Right now, Freedom is in foster, while she waits for her forever family. If you'd like to set up a meeting, you can email the foster team by clicking here.
