Meet 'Butter' | This LMAS urgent dog loves people and other pets

At Louisville Metro Animal Services, Butter is known as the big boy with an even bigger heart.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — UPDATE: Butter has been adopted!

Every week, WHAS11 features an at-risk dog from Louisville Metro Animal Services. These are dogs that have been without a home for way too long, and due to no fault of their own. This week’s WHAS11 Shelter Star is Butter, a 3-year-old boy who loves people and pets.

"He'll come out really strong but once he meets you he just melts, like Butter,” Molly Velander, LMAS volunteer, said. She said he is one of her favorites at the shelter right now, because his big size is deceiving and he's so quick to love.

"I think really what stands out is his big size, but he really is so sweet,” Velander said.

Butter is a mix breed who does great with other dogs, in fact he shares a kennel with another dog at the shelter. He knows basic commands and is well behaved in a home. As for his energy, staff describe it as moderate because he will tire quickly after some outdoor play.

"He's playful but I do think once he gets out and gets to run around a little bit he calms down,” Velander said.

She thinks this sweet boy would do great with a yard to run around in and will fit in with just about any family. At LMAS, Butter is known as the big boy with an even bigger heart.

If you think he could make a good addition to your family, contact the foster coordinator at Metro Animals Services. You can email her at MASfoster@louisville.ky.gov

If now isn't the right time to bring another animal into your home, here's two other ways to help alleviate overcrowding at the shelter.

  1. Find Louisville Metro Animals Services on social media and share the organization's posts. This could include pictures of adoptable pets, current needs at the shelter, or volunteer opportunities.

  1. Become a shelter pet advocate. Pick a dog at the shelter and become their champion. Visit them at the shelter and take them on walks, make fliers for them to share on social media and give them affection while they wait for their forever family.

Shay McAlister will be introducing you to a new dog every week in our WHAS Shelter Stars series. You can watch on WHAS11 at 4 p.m. every Thursday.
