LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It is almost time for a new baby elephant to join Mikki and Punch at the Louisville Zoo.
The zoo posted on its social media that staff is on 24-hour watch as 32-year-old Mikki has entered the birthing window. Staff will take daily blood samples and monitor Mikki's levels, saying once they drop the elephant will give birth soon.
Officials said Mikki is currently carrying a calf over 200 pounds, and her levels are still high. Her pregnancy was planned through artificial gestation. This is her second pregnancy, as her first baby died from a common complication of colic.
