ORANGE COUNTY, Indiana — It's not every day first responders help rescue a monkey from a tree in southern Indiana, but that's exactly what happened Tuesday night.

"Curious George decided to leave camp and go for a late night stroll," officials with the Orange County Rural District 1 Fire Department wrote on social media.

Authorities said the monkey got loose at the Patoka Lake Campgrounds just before midnight.

It eventually found its way up a tree where its leash got tangled on a branch roughly 30-35 feet above the ground.

The fire department said crews were able to strategically cut some of the tree branches to safely lower the monkey back to the ground and reunite it with its owner.

Officials said the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Indiana Conservation officers and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources assisted in the monkey rescue.

"This is most certainly a call for service our members will never forget," the fire department added.
