Meet Cedar! A young shelter dog who is in desperate need of a new family

This week’s WHAS11 Shelter Star is a young German Shepherd-Lab mix who loves all people and animals.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — UPDATE: Cedar was adopted from LMAS.

At LouisvilleMetro Animal Services (LMAS), hundreds of adoptable dogs and cats are desperately waiting for their forever family. The shelter is overcrowded, and when a dog stays for too long, tough decisions have to be made. Still, staff believe there is a family for every animal, they just need to find them.

One of the dogs most at risk right now unique blend of German Sheperd and lab -- Cedar. He stands out for all the right reasons.

"Cedar is the guy you want to take to every hike, every adventure. He just wants to experience it all. And he does it with all of the love and energy and enthusiasm that a dog can bring,” Liliara Pappaterra, his foster mom, said.

He's about a year and a half, but already knows his manners and is desperate to join a family.

"This good puppy would love a kid of his own! He wants so much to have an adventure buddy that will run with him every day,” Pappaterra said.

Cedar does great with dogs, cats and kids of all ages. He's even met chinchillas and his only reaction was to politely sniff.

He is high energy but his foster mom called it manageable energy, explaining he wants to be by your side so he's never trying to run away.

Cedar is still learning leash manners, but he is a quick learner. He is crate trained and potty trained. He already knows basic commands, like sit, and is quickly learning the other cute tricks.

"He's getting pretty good at paw!” Pappaterra said with a smile.

She absolutely adores Cedar and said he's been an easy addition to their home. He is gentle with the kids and perfect with the other pets.

"He understands pack dynamics, when to play, when to submit,” she said.

Beyond his love for other pets, his foster mom said he really loves his humans and is going to make his future family very, very happy.

"He's just got so much to give. He will adapt to what you want him to be. He wants to be with you. He wants to be part of your life. He wants to be at the forefront of everything and that's what will make him a fantastic family dog for the right people."

Cedar is in foster care right now so if you'd like to set up a meet and greet, contact the LMAS foster team at MASFoster@Louisvilleky.gov.
