LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This week's WHAS11 Shelter Star is a 5-year-old who just wants her own space. 'Melissa' is low maintenance and would love a second chance at a forever family. This, after she was adopted once, and then abandoned by her owners.
Missy Elzy has fostered a handful of dogs through Metro Animal Services and is currently fostering Melissa.
"I call her Lizzie, because I'm Melissa as well, and that's weird," she smiled.
Melissa, the dog, is around 50 lbs. She's known to staff as a sweet girl, and a 'playgroup superstar.' She loves to be outside, and go on walks and car rides. She is as happy as can be in the backyard chasing squirrels.
Everywhere Melissa goes, she's turning heads with the next best costume. This week's is a Tutu skirt.
"Anything I can do to draw attention to her to get adopted," Elzy said. "She's worn a witches hat, a jump suit. Just so that I can attract some attention to her and find her a good home."
Melissa is house trained and very good with other dogs. She loves treats and is low maintenance. Melissa is spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.
She's also one of the dogs likely to be put down when the shelter reaches its limit. It's become a harsh reality for LMAS in recent years. So, this is your chance to save her from that fate.
Since Melissa is with a foster, the best way to meet her is to contact the foster coordinator by email: MASfoster@louisvilleky.gov.
And if your home is already full of furry friends, here are three things you can do to help combat overcrowding at the shelter:
- Make sure your pet's microchip information and collar is up to date.
- Keep cats inside and keep dogs in a leash or within a secure fenced in area.
- Spay and neuter your pets.
