LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Everyday, staff at the Louisville Metro Animal Services are faced with tough decisions.

When animals begin showing behaviors that won't be desirable to adopters, their names are put a list to be euthanized. It's our hope someone will see what makes them special and save these dogs from that fate.

This week's WHAS11 Shelter Star is Violet.

She's an affectionate attention hog, and can be clingy to the ones she loves.

"She's like a Velcro dog. She'll always stay at my feet," Elisa Shoopman said.

Shoopman's mom rescued Violet in March and the pup's been with her foster family ever since.

"She'd been dumped. And the next morning, we went to give her a bath, and we've been inseparable ever since," Shoopman said.

She said Violet loves going on walks, but can be a complete couch potato too. And she loves food.

"Give her a treat, she'll love you more," Shoopman said.

Violet's great with people, despite how poorly she may have been treated by humans in the past.

"We think she may have come from an abusive relationship home, because she hates loud noises, and is deathly afraid of thunder because she was dumped in a thunderstorm," Shoopman said.

Like any shelter dog, she can be a bit anxious at times, and will need time to get completely comfortable with a forever family. But she's ready for the chance.

Violet's good on a leash, is house trained and probably better with older kids, though Shoopman says she does great with her baby sister. And she knows all the tricks to get your attention.

Right now, Violet remains in a foster home. The best way to meet her is to contact the foster coordinator by email at MASfoster@louisvilleky.gov.

And if now isn't the right time to bring an animal into your home, here are two other ways to help:

First, find Louisville Metro Animals Services on social media and share the organization's posts.

Second, become a shelter pet advocate. Pick a dog at the shelter and become their champion. Visit them at the shelter and take them on walks, make fliers for them to share on social media, and give them affection while they wait for their forever family.
