Sophie needs a home! Check out this chill 2-year-old mix from LMAS

Shay McAlister is back this week for another LMAS Shelter Star.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — There are some dogs who have been sitting at Louisville Metro Animal Services for months waiting for a family to pick them, and staff don't know why. 2-year-old mix Sophie is one of those dogs.

"She's a really, really nice dog. She seems to be super affectionate, super calm and chill out here with us," LMAS Public Information Officer Stephanie Jackson said. "She does get playful with other dogs, but in general she's just a nice girl who's waited a while for a family. So we know the right one will come along soon.

"Immediately she is kissing on every first date. No shame in that."

The tan pup is considered a "petite" large dog, weighing about 50 pounds. She gets along great with other dogs and is curious around cats. She is house trained already and knows basic commands.

Her energy level is moderate, as she is very calm around humans. But will get excited and play with other dogs.

"She is super receptive to pets and affection," Jackson said. "She's just kind of a low-key dog that really just wants to be loved by someone."

Sophie has been at the shelter for several months and continues to be overlooked by potential adopters. Staff love having her around, but really want her to find a home where she can relax.

“She's been with us for a little while and I'm not sure why. She's wonderful,” Jackson said.

Sophie has already proven she is a great house guest. Now she just needs someone to step up and welcome her in.

Right now, Sophie is available for adoption at the LMAS Animal House on Newburg Road. You can meet her any day of the week between 12-6 p.m.

Don’t forget the 3-3-3 rule.

The first three days after you adopt a dog, they won't be comfortable enough to be themselves. They may hide, avoid food or water, and feel overwhelmed.

After three weeks in the home, they'll start to settle in, hopefully feeling comfortable enough to explore and let their guard down. You may notice behavior problems, and this could be a good time to work on training.

But realistically it will take three months for the animals to be completely comfortable in their new home.

Shay McAlister will be introducing you to a new dog every week in our WHAS Shelter Stars series. You can watch on WHAS11 at 4 p.m. every Thursday.
