La Grange woman takes home top honors in 'Derby Burger Challenge'

Stacy Hoehle’s “P.L.T. Burger” took top honors following a cookoff at the Middletown Kroger on Tuesday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new champion has taken the throne in the annual Kentucky Derby Festival Derby Burger Challenge.

Stacy Hoehle’s “P.L.T. Burger” took top honors following a cookoff at the Middletown Kroger on Tuesday.

The first time entrant incorporated two of her food favorites, fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese. The burger also featured Kentucky Cattlemen’s ground beef, a remoulade sauce and Dan-O’s seasoning.

Hoehle explained that she loved snacking on her main ingredients and thought it would be a good idea to incorporate it into a burger.

Competing in the competition goes back to Hoehle’s love for cooking, attending Derby Festival events and showcasing her culinary skills.

“I love to eat and cook just about everything,” she said in a statement. “And I enjoy everything about the Derby Festival, so why not add this to the experience.”

Hoehle is among dozens who submitted recipes for the 2024 contest. Kentucky Derby Festival estimates about 20,000 people took part in voting for the final four.

Grant Ruble’s “Candy Dan” burger took home second place; third place – Brian Capps’ “Pesto Provolone Burger” and in fourth, Ira Mowman’s Jamaican jerk burger.

Their burgers were judged on taste, appearance, creativity, and ease of preparation.

With Hoehle’s win, her P.L.T. Burger recipe will be featured at Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront beginning April 25 through May 3 as well as inside all Kroger stores.

She will also receive a nice prize pack that includes an official Derby Festival poster, VIP tickets to the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport Thunder VIP Rooftop Party and VIP tickets to Republic Bank BourbonVille.
