Red Lobster bankruptcy documents list Louisville location among possible closures

The seafood chain abruptly closed dozens of restaurants last month. Many more could be coming soon.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville's Red Lobster locations have so far been spared as the restaurant chain navigates bankruptcy, but that could soon change.

The company recently revealed a list of more than 100 locations that could be on the chopping block if leases on the properties are unable to be renegotiated. Louisville's Outer Loop location near the Jefferson Mall is on the list.

Red Lobster filed for bankruptcy in May and abruptly closed dozens of restaurants around the United States. The chain also operates locations in St. Matthews and Clarksville, Ind.

A Paducah, Ky., location is also listed in the recent documents.

The list covers at least 132 locations across 31 states and includes the seafood chain's location in Times Square. The New York Post reported the chain is working to keep that location open as its landlord wants to double the annual rent to $2.2 million.

Red Lobster has yet to announce or confirm any additional store closings.

The Florida-based seafood chain, which won over fans with inventions like popcorn shrimp and “endless” seafood deals, has been struggling in recent years with rising lease and labor costs.

Days after filing for bankruptcy the company issued a statement reassuring customers that it wasn't going out of business.

Red Lobster currently operates about 570 restaurants, primarily in the U.S. and Canada. It employs about 36,000 people.
