CRESTWOOD, Ky. — April is typically a busy time of year for the Yew Dell Botanical Gardens.
Flowers are blooming and the warmer weather brings people out to see the new plants.
That isn’t the case the year. Right now the gardens are closed to the public.
But Yew Dell is bringing plants from the garden straight to you.
With spring plants ready to go into the ground, Yew Dell staff worked hard to come up with a way to sell plants online and get them to people while still socially distancing.
People who purchase plants through Yew Dell’s plant sale drive up, show their receipt through the window, and then plants will be loaded into the trunk.
It’s the first time they have sold online, and executive director Paul Cappiello says it has been a big success.
People came by to pick up spring wildflowers and popular evergreen perennials called hellebores.
Cappiello says now is a great time to get outside and start gardening.
“It’s very invigorating for the spirit,” Cappiello said. “I mean, there’s loads of research about how beneficial gardening is to your physical health, your emotional well being, especially now when we’re all cooped up in our houses.”
Some hellebores are still available on the Yew Dell website.
There will be another plant sale coming up soon if you missed this one.
Now is also the time when 14,000 bulbs planted by volunteers in the fall are starting to bloom.
You can see the Big Bloom through Facebook and Instagram, so even though you aren’t seeing these beautiful flowers in person, you can still get a little joy from them.
