LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A few Heine Brothers Coffee products were included in a recall list last week due to consumers' risk of contracting botulism.
On June 17, Snapchill LLC announced that hundreds of products from a variety of brands across the nation were being voluntarily recalled. One of the brands listed is Louisville's own Heine Brothers.
Snapchill is recalling all canned coffee products it manufactures, including Heine Bros canned coffees in the following flavors: black coffee, coconut latte and toasted coconut.
“On the advice of our co-packer, SnapChill (Chill Brew can provider), Heine Brothers Coffee has voluntarily pulled all Chill Brew cans and will not be selling this product," the company said in a statement to WHAS11 News. "Customers who may have purchased cans of Chill Brew can contact Heine Brothers about a refund at support@heinebroscoffee.com.”
According to the FDA, the current canning process Snapchill uses could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods.
Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning that can cause the following symptoms: General weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms.
Symptoms can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains botulinum toxin. The FDA advises that people experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
As of June 17, no illnesses had been reported and Snapchill was not aware of any instances in which the company’s products contained botulin toxin.
If you purchased any of these recalled products, the FDA says to either destroy the products or return it to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a refund. Snapchill will offer full refunds for any of these products with proof of purchase including a picture of the product before being destroyed.
