LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Breathitt County woman, who doesn’t normally play the lottery, was pleasantly surprised after she won big on a scratch-off ticket.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, told lottery officials she was driving back home from Lexington with her daughter when they stopped to put gas in her husband’s truck.

She had a hundred-dollar bill and put $50 of gas into the truck, and the other $50 in the lottery machine.

“I don’t play the lottery,” the woman said. “I thought, ‘I’ll get a ticket and let my daughter scratch it on the way home.’ I started to get two $20 tickets and a $5 ticket since the machine wouldn’t take one of my $5 bills.”

So the woman went back up to the clerk to swap out the $5 bill and purchased the $50 Millionaire Club ticket

“I tossed the ticket to my daughter in the truck and said, ‘Here, make your dad happy tonight,’” she said.

Her daughter scratched off part of the ticket and read that they won $50. She continued to scratch off the ticket and that's when she noticed the other hidden zeroes.

“She said, ‘Mom, mom I’m not even kidding, you won $50,000!’ Her face was priceless,” the woman said.

The woman called her husband to share the good news.

“When they called, I thought they had wrecked my truck, but they had smiles on their faces, so I figured everything was okay,” her husband said. “They said they won a little bit of money but never would have thought it was $50,000.”

Her husband told lottery officials that he had been playing the lottery for a long time and joked that he was upset his wife won before him.

“I’ve been playing the Powerball for 30 years and then she wins,” he said. “She doesn’t even play the lottery.”

After taxes, the family walked away with a check for $36,000. The couple told lottery officials they are going to buy furniture with the money.

“We’re tickled to death about this,” her husband said. “This comes at a really good time and is a blessing.”

Gasoline Alley will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
