LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As we all know with the recent string of heat waves, the dog days of summer are here, meaning increases for your utility bills.

If you are one of thousands of Louisville residents struggling to pay those high bills, you aren't alone. Thankfully, there is assistance with the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) summer subsidy.

LIHEAP gives those in need anywhere from $50-$250 that could go toward their utility bill. All you need to do is follow simple steps to keep those lights on and the AC running.

Tatiana Williams works at one of the program's offices and has been using LIHEAP for the past four years.

"My daughter called me and told me that the lights were out because she came home from school, so I called to get a disconnect walk-in with LIHEAP," she recalled. "When I did that they helped me get all my documents together and they helped me get my services that day."

Williams said the funds she received helped her purchase groceries and keep the hot water running while she worked to keep going on. She said she was also able to put some of the money toward other monthly bills that tend to sneak up.

LIHEAP Supervisor Brandon O'Neal said there is a clear need for help around the city.

"We are literally impacting people's lives, helping them stay cool during the summer months," he added. "It's a phenomenal feeling."
