LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, was surprised when she opened her email to find she had won $1 million.
The lucky woman bought a Powerball ticket online through the Kentucky Lottery’s website for the May 31 drawing.
The winning ticket matched the five white balls but not the Powerball, cinching the game’s $1 million second prize.
“I’ve played for years.” She told lottery officials she won $200 two months ago and prefers purchasing her tickets online.
“I can go on and do it and it takes only a couple of minutes,” she said.
While at work, she was looking through her emails when she came across one from the Kentucky Lottery informing her that she had won $1 million.
“I literally was like, no way,” she said. “I am just floored."
She said she stepped outside to call her husband. “Are you sitting down,” she asked him. “I think I just won a million dollars.” He said, “Oh, come on. What?” “I really think I did,” she told him.
“It could’ve been a scam,” she said. The couple questioned whether the email was a scam but after further investigation, felt confident she was a winner.
They received the reassurance they needed after showing up at Kentucky Lottery headquarters on Thursday afternoon to claim the ticket.
“Lightning has struck, very good lightning,” her husband told lottery officials.
The Jefferson County woman walked away with a check for $715,000 after taxes.
“This gives us so much freedom to do some things we want to do,” she said. For example, the couple said they'd like to do some things around the house and travel.
“I want it [winning] to be something that is an asset that we have. It’s not something I’m going to blow,” she said.
