WALTON, Ky. — While the $615 million Powerball jackpot wasn’t won Saturday night, a Walton, Kentucky man took home a small piece, winning himself $50,000.

Michael, who only wished to use his first name, won the game’s third prize after his ticket matched four white ball numbers and the Powerball.

While watching the Reds game with a friend, Michael said he decided to buy a $2 ticket for Saturday’s drawing.

“I originally bought just one but had a little bit of cash left on me. I was like, I might as well just buy another one, why not?” Michael said.

He bought an $8 ticket with four sets of numbers.

On Sunday morning, Michael walked out to his car to get something when he remembered his tickets.

He went inside, jumped on his computer, and looked at the winning numbers when he discovered he won $50,000.

“I looked at the screen and thought that one looks like it might be right,” he said.

He doubled checked his ticket using the “check my numbers” feature on the Kentucky Lottery’s website.

“It said, $50,000!  I was shocked… I don’t even know how else to describe it,” Michael said.

The first person he called was his mom. Michael also called his friend who was with him on Friday night.

“I went to the store where I bought it, and they checked it. They were all like, ‘You’re going to Louisville tomorrow,’” he told lottery officials.

After claiming his ticket Monday morning, Michael received a check for $35,750.

Michael told officials he may pay off his car and save the rest of his winnings.

Mac’s Liquor & Wine, located at Mary C Grubbs Highway in Walton, will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.

Tonight’s Powerball jackpot is an estimated $675 million with a cash option of $340.9 million.
