Back to FBI headquarters for Louisville's special agent in charge

LOUISVILLE, KY (WHAS11) - Kentuckiana has always been home, but for the 4th time in her career, the Special Agent In Charge for the FBI Louisville Field Office will be moving to Washington D.C.

Amy Hess has been called back to headquarters to now be in charge of the Criminal Cyber Response and Services branch.

Director Christopher Wray tapped Hess himself.

“If the director has confidence in me that he thinks that I’m the right pick,” Hess said, “then I don’t want to let him down.”

The department goes after the bad guys electronically coordinating everything from international terrorism to human trafficking.

With daily briefings with Wray, Hess says part of the job will be advising the director on how protocol and the rules may need to be changed to make the FBI more effective.

“Look at how ubiquitous digital technology is or cyber crimes are and so maybe the law needs to catch up, maybe policy needs to catch up,” Hess said.

Her second assignment to Louisville not even two years long, Hess credits victories to her team with perhaps the biggest win being the capture on Eric Conn.

Conn, on the run after conning the Social Security system, was caught in Central America.

“Sometimes certain people that we encounter in the course of our criminal investigations think that they’re smarter than they actually are,” Hess pointed out.

With this latest departure, scheduled for September 15, Hess promises it’s not goodbye, it’s I’ll be back.

“I have every intention of getting back to Louisville, somehow, someday.”
