Bullitt County offering free gun safety class following new permitless carry law

Bullitt County Sheriff's Office will host a free gun safety class for the first time following the passage of SB 150.

BULLITT COUNTY, Ky. — For the first time, Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office will host a free defensive handgun and safety class open to the public on Saturday, June 29. The announcement comes after SB 150 took effect on Thursday, June 27.

Under the new law, anyone 21-years-old and up in Kentucky no longer needs a permit to carry a concealed firearm. Despite the change, law enforcement said people still need to be trained when it comes to safety.

"We felt like that being the case, it's going to be very important for the citizens of Bullitt County in particular and the Commonwealth in general to have a good understanding of gun safety,” Sheriff Walt Sholar said. "There's a need for higher level of marksmanship than we generally think of."

Sholar supports the new law, but he said people need to be aware of all the rules that come with it.

"We'll teach them safety in the home, how to store a gun safely, carry a gun on their person when they're out, how to safely store a gun in their car," Sholar said.

While you don't have to have concealed carry permit in Kentucky, you will need one to travel across state lines. There are still gun restrictions on school grounds and federal buildings.

The class is open to the first twenty-five Bullitt County residents who sign-up.
Sholar said if there is enough interest in the first class, people can expect more classes in the future.

"That will help them survive in the event that they ever have to use a gun to protect their life or the life of someone they love," Sholar said.
