Carmichael's joins hundreds of libraries in Bookstores Against Borders fundraiser

Carmichael's is joining bookstores around the nation this weekend for the Bookstores Against Borders fundraiser to help refugees and immigrants.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Carmichael's joins bookstores around the nation this weekend for the Bookstores Against Borders fundraiser. Ten percent of all of their sales both in the store and online will go to help refugees.

"Raices is an organization that provides low cost or free legal aid to immigrants and refugees," said Bri Esposito who is the Events & Marketing Manager at Carmichael's. "They provide low cost or free legal services to refugees and immigrants. Part of that is making sure that children have representation in courts.

When you read a book, you're immersed in the story and characters, allowing you to understand a different point of view.

"I think books inspire empathy and that might be a part of it. It's also a really good gathering place. Books are about free speech, they're about coming together," said Esposito.

Bookstores Against Borders was started by A Room of One's Own Bookstore in Madison, Wisconsin. "Hundreds of bookstores all around the country are donating a portion of their sales to Raices."

Carmichael donates to many humanitarian efforts throughout the year, their main focus is on community.

"I think independent bookstores, what makes us special, is that we give back to the community. It's what we do that larger corporations don't do. So we always try to have a focus on where we can help and where we can give back where other people are suffering or where they need it," said Esposito.

They help wherever they see a need. That means locally and globally.

Carmichael's has already seen a spike in sales from Friday, this fundraiser goes through Sunday.
