LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville is one step closer to having a local children's museum.
The AHOY Children's Museum in the Portland neighborhood held its groundbreaking over the weekend.
AHOY stands for "Adventure House for You." The museum will be centered around fact, folklore and fiction -- including exhibits on everything from American bison sleeping to walking through Devonian fossils.
According to the museum's website, AHOY "aims to engage a child's natural curiosity by activating all of the senses."
The Portland Children's Museum is inspired by the City Museum in St. Louis.
"I would say that it's the most exciting thing to have something here in our backyard," the museum's executive director, Katy Delahanty, said. "I can't tell you how many kids can't get to any of these kinds of experiences because they don't have a car. They don't have access, and truly, it's a disservice to them. So this is amazing."
The first phase of the museum is expected to be complete at the end of 2026 -- which will include a renovation of a Victorian house that sits on Portland Avenue.
