'It was our stroke of genius': Derby City Norsemen raises thousands for ALS of Kentucky

Since 2017, the group has raised around $25,000 for nonprofits across Louisville.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For Minnesota Vikings fans in the Metro, Sunday's halftime was a little sweeter than expected.

Fans were able to donate $5,000 to ALS of Kentucky during halftime.

The group, called the Derby City Norsemen, gather at Gerstles every season to both watch the Vikings and donate to a local nonprofit.

They sell raffle tickets for 50 cents throughout the season.

"That was started before I moved here," Derby City Norseman John Chawk said. "You know, they felt like that was a way to give back to everybody. And it was, we just take the ball and run with it."

Fellow Derby City Norseman Jim Douglass said it brings "something special" to the season.

"It was our stroke of genius," he said. "But when you add that charity part portion to it, it makes us all feel good."

Since 2017, the group has raised around $25,000 for nonprofits across Louisville.
