It's GivingTuesday! Here's some Kentuckiana nonprofits you can support

Last year, GivingTuesday raised a record $3.1 billion in 24 hours for charitable causes across the nation.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the next 24 hours, numerous organizations across Kentuckiana are looking for your support as GivingTuesday begins.

The charitable event, which began as a hashtag in 2012, is a staple of fundraising for nonprofits during the holiday season, according to the group.

Last year, a record $3.1 billion was donated to organizations across the United States. That's not including the numerous acts of generosity contributed without donating money.

Here's a list of nonprofits in Kentucky and southern Indiana you can support:

Animals

Animal Care Society

ACS is Louisville's first no-kill animal shelter. If you can't support financially, register to become a foster parent or donate items from the group's wish list!

The group is also hosting their annual 'Bow Wow Meow Boutique' fundraiser on Dec. 1 through Dec. 3. They will offer hundreds of specially-crafted gift baskets, including 200 liquor baskets, just in time for the holidays!

Kentucky Humane Society

KHS is Kentucky's largest pet adoption provider and its oldest animal welfare organization.

Donations can be made online, but if you'd rather take a more hands-on approach at supporting, try temporarily donating your space and time by fostering one of their pets in need.

Southern Indiana Animal Rescue

Despite not having a facility, each of the rescue's dogs are placed in personal foster homes. Each animal goes through a vetting process, including a trip to the vet to be checked up, spayed/neutered, microchipped and given vaccinations.

Apply online to be a foster parent or consider making a monetary donation. 

You can also donate pet supplies, which can be conveniently ordered and shipped through online retailers.

Arts

Art Sanctuary

The sanctuary is made up of a small group of artists and performers who host events for the community on small budgets and "lots of love, creativity and volunteer support."

The Governor's School for the Arts

GSA gives rising high school sophomores and juniors across Kentucky the opportunity to take a deep dive into one of nine creative art forms.

Since 1987, the program is one of the only tuition-free Governor's School for the Arts in the nation.

Clarksville Little Theatre

Help keep this southern Indiana theatre running through donations or volunteer your time! The group is in the midst of their 2023-2024 season,. Their next show is Puffs which will run from Jan. 12-14 and Jan. 19-21, 2024.

Louisville Chorus

The Louisville Chorus is one of the longest-thriving most frequently performing choral arts group in Kentuckiana. The internationally-recognized group performs a wide arrange of choral pieces throughout the year.

Community

Adelante Hispanic Achievers 

The nonprofit empowers Latinx youth to achieve their dreams and provides mentor opportunities for children.

Dare to Care

Dare to Care was started after a 9-year-old boy in Louisville died of hunger on Thanksgiving in 1969. The nonprofit aims to ensure that never happens again.

Food insecurity has risen across our community by nearly 30%, according to a recent report and food banks across Kentuckiana are struggling to meet demand as the holiday season begins.

2NOT1: Fatherhood & Families

According to the group, a large percentage of children are raised in single-parent households, often times its the mother raising the children. 2NOT1 helps keep fathers involved in the lives of their children. They also create safe spaces for children to interact with mentors.

WHAS Crusade for Children

Education

Filson Historical Society 

Support the Filson's mission to collect, preserve and share the stories of Kentucky and the Ohio Valley region.

Kentucky Derby Museum 

Located at Churchill Downs, home to the world-famous Kentucky Derby, the museum celebrates all things horse racing! 

The museum educates more than 30,000 students across Kentucky and southern Indiana about the history and impact of the fastest two minutes in sports.

Environment

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest

Bernheim, located in Clermont, Kentucky, is the largest privately held forest dedicated to education and conservation in the entire eastern U.S. The organization exists so everyone can explore their deep connections to nature.

Buck Creek Sanctuary

Located in Elizabeth, Indiana, this 58-acre nature and wildlife sanctuary offers forest bathing, foraging workshops, native plant education hikes and community-building events.

Louisville Grows

The group's mission is to grow greener, healthier communities across Louisville through sustainable means.

Healthcare 

American Red Cross

The Red Cross relies on donations of time, money and resources from local communities to do its work.

Try donating money online or offer up your time and volunteer. For those who can brave the needle, find a local blood drive and donate blood. 

Donate Life Kentucky

One organ donor can save up to eight lives, according to the group. Help support their programs financially or register to become a donor today.
