Kentuckiana Pride Festival prepares to welcome tens of thousands to Big Four Lawn

"It's really awesome to see how our community is just on the center stage this weekend," said Jenna Murnan, a member of the Fairness Campaign.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — This weekend 25,000 people will head to the waterfront for a sold out Kentuckiana Pride Festival. The event is expected to be a record breaker as the most attended in the organization's history.

On Wednesday members of the Fairness Campaign in Louisville were blowing up 10,000 balloons for their float in the Kentuckiana Pride Parade.

"We are building what will be our human balloon float," Jenna Murnan, development associate for the Fairness Campaign, said. "We are assembling about 10,000 balloons that will turn into balloon backpacks that people will carry."

This isn't Murnan's first pride parade as she's lived in the city for sever years.

"It's so exciting and seeing how especially this year how big it's gotten and how excited people are," Murnan said. "It's really awesome to see how our community is just on the center stage this weekend."

Heather Ayer, a board member for the organization, said they've been established in the city so long that they try to take part in annual event frequently.

Last year the organization made a statement for trans rights, wearing white, light blue and pink balloons in the parade.

"I just walked in and it look like it will be rainbow this year," Ayer said. "Which I'm excited about but it's just great to see all the people come out, chant, people love seeing Fairness in the parade. I mean I think they're excited to see everyone in the parade and the balloons are always eye catching."

The parade will conclude at the Big Four Lawn where a sold out music festival is set to take place. Both Murnan and Ayer said they are very excited for headliners Icona Pop and Chappell Roan to take the main stage.

"One of my co-workers was like, 'Oh did you know that Chappell Roan is performing at Kentuckiana Pride?' they told me that in January," Ayer said. "And I was like what? Are you serious?"

"She's a very fierce advocate for the LGBT community she has drag queens open for her before she performs," Murnan said. "And she's just an exciting and high energy performer. She just draws people into her."

Chappell Roan will take the main stage at 7:40 p.m. this Saturday and Icona Pop will follow at 9 p.m.
