LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville is celebrating the 90th birthday of a champion for civil rights.

Rev. Charles Elliott was celebrated by his peers and community members during a special event at King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church.

He walked and worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and has been a civil rights pioneer in Kentucky for more than 50 years.

Elliott helps lead the annual Father’s Day Peace Walk, Martin Luther King Jr. Motorcade and other efforts for peace, economic-social justice and non-violence.

“This is a great opportunity for us to tell Pastor Elliott that we love him, we appreciate him, being a civil rights leader, being a teacher, being a father-figure, being one of the men that you can always depend on to be there,” Rev. Wanda McIntyre, director of Jesus Movement, said.

Elliott was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2012.
