LMPD honors officer who convinced man to not jump off bridge

Ofc. Ali Thomas joined LMPD in March 2021 after serving for Louisville Fire for 20 years.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) officer is being hailed a hero after he saved a man from jumping off a bridge on Oct. 9.

Body camera the department released during a biweekly news conference on Wednesday showed the officer talking the man down from the ledge.

"That is material [expletive] and that can all be replaced," Ofc. Ali Thomas said in the video. "She can be replaced. Your personal stuff can be replaced. We can't replace you."

It happened on the Abraham Lincoln Bridge.

Thomas joined LMPD in March 2021 after serving for Louisville Fire for 20 years.

LMPD leaders said Thomas is exactly the type of people they hope to have as officers.

"This is why we we took this job," Assistant Chief Emily McKinley said. "We we took this job because we wanted to help people. We said that every single one of us said that when we went through our interviews of, why do you want to be a police officer? Why do you want to join LMPD? We do want to help people, and this is what we want to do."
