LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law has opened a new legal clinic to help immigrants on the path to citizenship.

UofL’s law students will be working with former U.S. immigration judge and clinic director Chris Kozoll. The new clinic will be located at the Legal Aid Society building in downtown Louisville.

According to a UofL news release, the new immigration law clinic will represent clients and assist them in completing the paperwork needed to attain legal status and a path to citizenship. They will serve clients who are authorized to be in the U.S. and Kentucky but may not have the requisite documentation to prove it.

“As an immigration judge, I have been able to see the practice from many different perspectives and witness law trends,” Kozoll said. “I’m eager to pass along my knowledge to students and bring others into what has been an incredible practice for me.”

He said many immigrants who are eligible to apply for work permits or permanent status lack access to legal representation, making it hard for them to join the workforce.

The new clinic was funded in part with the help of the Kentucky General Assembly, which gave UofL $1.5 million in funding for the community resource during the 2024 legislative session.

This is the Brandeis School of Law’s sixth clinic. Other clinics help the community with assistance in domestic violence, mediation, eviction defense, elder law and entrepreneurship.
