Michelle King named new executive director of Louisville Parks and Recreation

King, a lifelong Louisville-native, currently serves as the assistant director of Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville's park system is now under new leadership.

On Friday, Mayor Craig Greenberg named Michelle King as the new executive director of the city's Parks and Recreation

King is a lifelong Louisville-native. She currently serves as the assistant director of Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District, where she's been since 2005.

"I've been a Louisville Metro employee for nearly 20 years," King said. "I know the pride that comes from serving your community and I want to make sure that every parks and recreation employee feels that too, and that they know they are valued and supported as I have been in my years at the air pollution control district."

King will officially take over the new executive director role on June 24.

Louisville Parks and Recreation consists of 123 parks, 14 community centers and more than 13,000 acres of land across the city.

At a news conference Friday afternoon, Greenberg thanked Ozzy Gibson, who has served as Interim Executive Director over the past year, for his help to prepare the department for its next leader.

"I am confident in Michelle's ability to lead Louisville Parks and Recreation with vision, strategy and dedication," the mayor said. "Her extensive experience in Metro and proven track record in fostering collaboration make her an excellent fit for this role."
