LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville’s third annual “Safe Summer Kickoff” is coming up in just a few days.

On Saturday, June 8, there will be numerous free, family-friendly events spread across neighborhoods where the impact of gun violence is frequent or new.

Director of Louisville’s Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods (OSHN) Paul Callanan said the summer kickoff helps bring communities together in the hope of reducing violence.

“When people know each other, they have a greater interest in each other,” he said on Thursday.

This year, OSHN is not planning any of the events. Instead, the office gave $5,000 to ten neighborhood-based nonprofits to develop and hire vendors specific to that community’s culture and the interest of its residents.

At some of the events, residents can enjoy petting zoos, face painting, mini-basketball games, Greek step shows, live music, bouncy houses, arts and crafts, virtual technology booths, community resources, unique foods, family games and health screenings from Norton Healthcare.
