Oglala Lakota poet discusses activism at Speed Art Museum

Layli Long Soldier is also the author of the book, "Whereas."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The theme for this year's Native American Heritage Month is honoring our nations: building strength through resilience.

One woman who does just that is Layli Long Soldier, an Oglala Lakota poet and activist.

Thursday while visiting the Speed Art Museum, she discussed her creative process and how she finds inspiration from visual arts.

Long Soldier is also the author of the book, "Whereas."

Most of the poems were written in response to a national apology to Native Americans, signed by President Obama in 2010 and it was a congressional act, and something that I, at the time, was a little unsettled with," she said.

The apology document is relatively unknown as it was closed to the public.

Thus the apology was never directly appointed towards any people of indigenous descent.
