LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A beloved piece of memorabilia from the old Phoenix Hill Tavern is now looking for a new home.
The Baxter Avenue tavern closed its doors and then was demolished.
In 2016, they auctioned off equipment and decorations sacred to the 40-year old business.
Included in that was a massive moose head that adorned the area above the fireplace in the tavern, keeping a watchful eye over the many bands that came through to perform.
Joe and Lee Kresovsky and their band Wicker Frog were among those musicians, and the proud owners of the moose for the last eight years when they paid $1,500 for the mount in the auction.
"We got to perform there; we had an album release party…we just had to own the moose," Joe said.
The moose has hung on the living room wall at the Kresovsky home for nearly a decade, nearly 50 years of memories hanging with it.
But, just as the moose moved from the tavern to the Kresovsky home, Joe and Lee are now moving out of Louisville to North Carolina...and leaving the moose in the Bluegrass state.
"This is where his home is," Lee said.
The family is now looking for someone to adopt the moose and continue its legacy here in Louisville.
"Hopefully in the public so everyone can enjoy him," Joe said. "To get those musicians back with the moose to bring up those memories again…that's our goal."
The Kresovsky's went to social media asking people to share their Phoenix Hill Tavern stories: What does the moose mean to you? Where will it live? And then privately make a bid to buy it.
The family will then announce who will adopt the moose on Jan. 31.
The family's ultimate goal for the moose is to keep Phoenix Hill Tavern and it's memories alive.
