Snow day! Louisville families enjoy sledding in Metro parks

Seneca Park's golf course was filled with parents creating new memories with their children on Friday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As snow blankets all of Louisville Friday, families headed to the highest hills they could find.

"It's a nice snowy day so we decided to come out and hit the slopes with the sleigh," resident Joseph Spencer said.

Sledding is a tradition in Spencer's household. Though his children are now grown, he and his wife still sled down Seneca Park.

"It brings back a lot of good memories and now that our daughter has kids, kind of passing that on to the generations," Spencer said.

"It's just an awesome experience getting to see them,” mother of six Lynda Mawhinney said. "Their little rosy cheeks, their smiling faces and just seeing them have fun."

Just like 8-year-old Nicky who said he's the fastest on the hill.

"Super-duper fast," he said.

Here’s a picture of WHAS 11 Alexis Jones after she challenged Nicky to a race. Sadly for her, he remains undefeated.

Nicky credited his sled and the golf course for his success.

However, on Louisville Parks and Recreation's list of hills best for sledding 2022, Seneca Park's didn't make the cut, which people say is unfortunate.

“This is one of the best hills in Louisville," Spencer said. "It's just the right length, got the right angulations, the right angles so you're not going too fast, but you're going fast enough."

Spencer added there's still a chance you will take tumble, but he assured the snow will break your fall.

"You know, you'll recover,” he said. “Go home to get some nice hot cocoa."

Or you can follow 3-year-old Daniel Mawhinney, and enjoy a handful of snow.

If you plan to go sledding, Louisville Parks and Recreation shared some safety tips you can follow. They include only using objects designed for sledding and checking your path for trees and other objects.
