Thousands of JCPS students identify as homeless every year, here's how you can help this holiday season

Last school year, over 3,500 JCPS students identified as homeless.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Thousands of Jefferson County Public Schools students every year identify as homeless. This holiday season, you can sponsor a local family in need.

By participating in the annual Adopt a Family Winter Program, you can help bring warmth and holiday cheer to students in need.

Through the program, donors provide gifts and support for JCPS families who are experiencing homelessness, ensuring every child can enjoy the holiday season.

Last year, more than 3,500 JCPS students identified as homeless.

“We believe the true number of homeless students is at least double the number from last school year,” said Giselle Danger, a specialist in the JCPS Access & Opportunity Office. “Participating in the Adopt A Family program is a gesture that can make a lasting impact in a child’s life.”

To participate, sponsors can complete an online form, allowing staff to carefully match each sponsor with a homeless student or family. Sponsors can be individuals or a team of people.

JCPS is asking donors to purchase gifts, gift cards, or a combination of the two in the amount of $100 per child this season. The gift cards may include businesses such as Walmart, Target, Visa, or any restaurant providing the family with a meal, clothing and a gift for each child..

Gifts can be delivered to JCPS Camp Edwards, 701 S. Hancock Street, Louisville, Ky., between December 2-6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
