TARC could implement new transit system by next August, seeks feedback in coming months

The first of three public engagement rounds for residents to provide feedback on what TARC’s priorities should be with the updated network begins later this month.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) is looking to redesign Louisville’s transit system and wants to know what the community believes its priorities should be.

TARC is launching a “new planning process and community conversation” project, called TARC 2025, to determine what the transit system should look like with its expected funding in the next five to 10 years.

The process is expected to be completed by next February, which is when final proposals for the redesigned TARC network will be released to the public.

Officials said the new network could be implemented as early as August 2025.

“TARC is facing serious financial challenges and a looming deficit that has to be addressed,” TARC’s new Executive Director Ozzy Gibson said.  “This is the chance for our community to join in on that conversation and let us know what’s important to them and what TARC should prioritize as we move this forward.”

The first of three public engagement rounds is expected to begin on July 30 through September 9.

Ahead of those meetings, residents can take an online survey now.

Upcoming TARC feedback periods

  • Round 1 (July 30 - September 9) – TARC will gather feedback on three different network concepts representing choices TARC could make to address its current challenges. These will not be full proposals, but rather illustrations of what transit could look like. Public feedback will directly inform the drafting of Round Two proposals, officials said.
  • Round 2 (November and December 2024) – Draft proposals will be released based on community feedback from the previous sessions. There will be public meetings, presentations and surveys to gather additional feedback from the community.
  • Round 3 (February and March 2025) – After the final proposals are completed, TARC will once again gather community feedback about implementation strategies.
