This family-owned farm in Kentucky went from dairy to pumpkin patches

Thomas Dairy Farm and Market considers itself a getaway from city life, where you can celebrate fall on a farm.

HARDIN COUNTY, Ky. — Thomas Dairy Farm and Market sits just outside of downtown Elizabethtown. Celia Thomas says with the way the county has been growing, more and more the city seems to be encroaching on the country.

That’s not a bad thing, but she says sometimes people want that getaway from the hustle and bustle. Their farm has been doing that for years.

“To be able to have a spot where they can come to kind of get away from the bustle of the growth, you know the hustle and bustle of the growth…it’s cool to be able to welcome people in,” Thomas said.

She runs the farm with her family. The farm itself has been around since 1965 but’s in the last 20 years the farm has undergone a change.

The family decided to take the dairy, out of the dairy farm and lean into the agrotourism industry. Thomas says it’s been a worthwhile change all around.

“Keep[s] the generations of the family involved in the farm and keep[s] the farm in this great growing community,” Thomas said.

The cows are gone, but the goats still welcome the visitors, one of them even prowls around saying hi to the guests as they play on the playground, go down the slides, play in the corn pit, and of course go into the pumpkin patch.

She says that everyone has their own favorite type of pumpkin, and the family prides itself on growing all kinds.

“Pumpkin harvest is so fun,” Thomas said.

“We grow 75 different varieties of pumpkins, all within one patch, so each plant has a different size, a different color, or even a different shape pumpkin. So, getting out there and harvesting the pumpkins and seeing what has grown is really cool,” she continued.

The farm also leans into the Halloween spirit, with a zombie paintball game, and a haunted forest that opens at dark.

Thomas Dairy Farm’s Fall Festival runs through November 2nd.
