LOUISVILLE, Ky. — More than 11,000 wreaths were laid on the graves of veterans at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Windy Hills as part of the annual Wreaths Across America ceremony.
This was the first time enough wreaths were donated to lay one on each of the headstones in the cemetery.
"It's a beautiful sight," said Susan Calmey, co-location coordinator for Wreaths Across America. "We are so pleased to say that we have placed a wreath on every single marker here today. It is the first time in over 12 years that we've been able to say that. And thank you to the community for all the support. I can't even begin to explain the gratitude I have for those that served this country, for each and every one of us."
1,600 people signed up to lay wreaths Saturday, the most the Louisville-area location has ever seen.
"It was a blessing, it was a blessing for us to do this. I’m really glad God let us do all this and it’s really nice to see it," said Victor Gatlin with Civil Air Patrol. "How much they gave…they didn’t have to do that but they did. It’s just, it’s really cool to see."
This is a national effort to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation about the value of freedom.
